Out of curiosity, how many of you write thank you notes for Christmas presents? My father keeps insisting that I need to send a letter to everyone in my family, thanking them for their gifts. I already thanked them once in person. Shouldn't that be enough? I mean, what am I supposed to write -- thanks for the socks?

Thank you notes are only obligatory for gifts received from events that are not considered 'holidays,' as such -- weddings, anniversaries, having a baby  the impending birth of a child, leaving Hogwarts, passing your Apparition test, and the like. Holidays in which gifts are the norm do not require thank you notes -- birthdays, Christmas, Valentine's, etc. Your father sounds overly concerned with keeping up appearances. Is he in danger of losing his social standing?

That's what my mother said when I asked her. My father was so enthusiastic about the idea though that she wasn't positive. I guess this is just another instance of my father's love for writing letters getting the better of him.

He may have a point though. I probably should write to my great-aunts. It would cheer them up a bit.
